Causes of Toenail Fungus – 4 things you Have to know

What Causes Toenail Fungus?

Nail fungus or otomycosis is a fungal infection that is present in about 1 in every 10 people. It can be mild or severe to the extent that the nail simply crumbles off. It is usually caused by fungi called dermatophytes and they thrive in damp and wet conditions.

Once you get the fungus, it is likely that you may spread it to other parts of your body. You may also spread it to others. For this reason it is best to get treated as soon as possible.

If you have had a fungal infection before or have it now, you know that the saying “Prevention is better than cure” rains true.

In order to prevent it, you need to know what causes it.

Following are some circumstances that may lead to (or have lead you to) contract a fungal infection.

Wearing shoes for extend time

Wearing shoes for long hours, say a typical 10-hour shift can cause toenail fungus. This is because your feet are enclosed in a confined space with no air.

The sweat from your feet will make the area damp. Combined with the darkness, this creates a haven for fungus to grow.

For that reason, people like soldiers, guards or laborers are particularly susceptible to having toenail fungus.

Excessive water

Another common condition that causes toenail fungus is excessive water. Where a small amount of water is beneficial for the body, a large amount could result in harm.

Long exposure to water to the nails causes the water to seep into the nail bed. This damages the tissues and cuts off the nail supply.

When this happens, optimal conditions for fungal growth is created.

Washerwoman and maids often have this complaint. Their nails become discolored and even separated from the nail bed.

Generally these are typical cases of nail fungus.

Sharing is not always caring

Fungus often resides in wet towels or bathroom slippers of people that have a fungal infection.

By using the same towels, you may unknowingly get infected, if you use the same towels or bathroom slippers.

This is why it is always a good idea to opt for your own things. It works both ways. You need to make sure that nobody uses your towels or slippers either.

This could result in cross transfer and you wouldn’t want to transmit the disease to anyone either, would you?

A common source of nail fungus is the beauty parlor. When you go to have your nails done, the beautician may not be careful enough to replace the equipment or use sterilized ones every time.

This can lead to infection transmission from one client to the other.

A good idea is to carry your own instrument case or opt for a salon that provides sterile services. A simple beauty expenditure may result in a chronic problem. It’s far better to avoid it.

These are some of the most common causes of nail fungus, which you need to know in order to steer clear of the disease. Sometimes it may be hard to prevent such situations, particularly if your job description requires it.

However, some precautions, frequent breaks and remedies such as Zeta-Clear Antifungal solution can help you keep the fungus at bay and maintain healthy nails.

How can you get rid of nail fungus?

There are many natural home remedies available (some of them you can read about on my site).

Unfortunately, due to the nature of a fungal infection, no remedy you choose will be a quick one.

Some home remedies do work for some people, but because nail and fungus take a long time to grow, you are going to have to wait a long time to see which one works for you.

There are however products that are specifically designed to cure nail fungus.

If you have a nail fungal infection that you would like to get rid of, read my Full Review of a product that would most likely be able to help you get rid of your nail fungus.
